The Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT) is currently the biggest of the 16 departments in the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH). About 30 professors work in nine institutes and two independent professorships. The scientists cover the whole spectrum from the behaviur of nanoparticles to the mechanics of big machine tools. They examine among other things processes within the human body and high pressure processes at scales ranging from micro to macro and carry out research into robots, cars, nuclear plants and wind turbines. And it’s always top class.
The Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering educates students for excellence and leadership in science and industry through cutting edge research on an international platform to face the challenges of the Swiss and global society and economy by engineering innovation in its technology fields.
Reach and maintain excellence and leadership in fulfilling its mission as recognized (e.g. among the top five departments worldwide) by students, industry, peers and the board of ETH Zurich.
• Educate students in the application of natural sciences and engineering principles for the most urgent technological challenges.
• Recruit and retain high quality faculty members and students with focus on increasing diversity, especially with respect to increasing the number of women in the department.
• Increase interaction and strengthen collaboration with industry.
• Establish an education that emphasizes interdisciplinary programs with focus on MAVT’s strategic technology fields.
