Application for Admission to Doctoral Studies

Basic prerequisite for admission to doctoral studies at ETH is a master's degree acquired at full university level. A degree from a University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule) is not considered equal. Furthermore, a professor from ETH Zurich has to agree with acting as your supervisor. The website Institutes and Professors offers an overview of the research areas of the MAVT-professors. A professor who is accredited or adjunct at D-MAVT can also be chosen.

The admission to the doctoral studies at the ETH Zurich is carried out individually. The Prorector examines due to the scientific qualifications whether the candidate must fulfil qualifying exams. The decision (in accordance with the regulation of doctoral studies) depends on the university at which the candidate has taken his/her degree and his/her performances obtained. Depending on the educational background three individual admission examinations are fixed by D MAVT for which the candidate can prepare by the attendance of regular ETH-courses.

Once a professor has agreed to be your doctoral supervisor, complete the online registration form on the right and send it, together with the necessary documents, to the Doctoral Ad-ministration of the Rectorate. Normally, the candidate applies for an employment at the ETH. The registration to the doctoral studies and the employment are two different processes which run parallel. The application documents with the registration form to the doctoral studies must be submitted to the Doctoral Administration at the same time with the application for employment to the Human Resources. Graduates from a foreign university are advised to turn in their applications at least two months before they should begin their doctoral studies; this is to ensure that they will be registered and in possession of their student ID in time to start. Graduates from Swiss universities can turn in their application two weeks prior to start-ing their doctoral studies. Apart from this, there are no admission deadlines.
