Credit Units and Confirmations of Course Attendance

 

The doctoral studies make sure that doctoral candidates gain additional education in their specialization as well as in other fields.

Candidates must earn at least 12 credits during their doctoral studies. One credit corresponds to a workload equivalent to 25-30 hours. The doctoral candidate must obtain at least one third of the required credits outside his/her research field. The doctoral candidate may, in consultation with the supervisor, individually choose his/her doctoral studies.

• D-MAVT tabulates the credits for the ETH courses and activities according to the D-MAVT detailed regulations as follows:

1. Course attendance confirmation received without examination: # credits = # hours (V+U, G)
2. Course with examination: # credits = ECTS (as for Master students)

• Credits for ETH external courses and activities:

1. The supervisor is authorized to approve credit units for courses/activities that are not within the ETH program, provided that each credit corresponds to a workload equivalent to 25-30 hours.
2. Serving on search committee for professor: 2 credit units
3. Officially representing assistants and Doctoral students in departmental meetings: 1 credit unit per semester
4. Active participation in other approved committees, provided that one credit corresponds to a workload equivalent to 25-30 hours.
5. Credit units acquired for the Teaching Certificate may be counted towards the credit requirements, provided the supervisor agrees.

Credit units acquired in connection with a qualifying examination for doctoral studies are not counted towards the credit requirements when enrolling for the doctoral examination.

The Student Administration Office is responsible for the control of the allowable credits and will require the supervisor's signature on all relevant credit sheets or course certificates.
