Doctoral studies at ETH Zurich are characterized by independent and original scientific research conducted under the supervision of a professor. Doctoral studies introduce highly qualified students to cutting-edge research and constitute some of the most important scientific work conducted at ETH Zurich. The program ensures that doctoral candidates gain further knowledge and know-how in their specific field as well as other relevant areas. Doctoral students also learn the skill of teaching at university level by contributing to the teaching at their department.

The ETH awards the title Dr. sc. ETH after a successful conclusion of a doctoral thesis.
