Honours and Awards

Several awards are available for the D-MAVT doctoral candidates:

• ETH Medal – for an outstanding doctoral thesis
• ABB Research Award (alternately - one year for Energy Technology, the next for Information and Automation Technology)
• Dimitris N. Chorafas Award
• Georg A. Fischer Award
• Hilti Award - for Innovative Research

The ETH Medal and the George A. Fischer Price are reserved for the D-MAVT. The candidates are nominated by the D MAVT jury. The Professors Conference makes an application to the Rector, who decides about the award.

According to the directives D-MAVT - after approval of the nominations from the Professors Conference in September - makes an application for the award of the medal (s) to the Rector in a collective declaration until October 15th.

The precise procedure, the date and the number of medals for the submission of applications (about the end of August) will be announced to the professors in summer. Supervisors of a completed thesis, which were considered by him / her and the other experts as reasonable, should submit the following documents for the ETH Medal and the George A. Fischer Award completely:

• Recommendation letter from the supervisor for the attention of the Doctoral Committee with a statement of justification of the extraordinary nature of the thesis
• A copy of the invitation of the doctoral examination
• Referee and Co-referees
• A copy of the thesis
• Curriculum vitae of the candidate
• List of Publications
• List of posters, lectures, other scientific articles, patents
• Confirmation of the period of study and actual position
• An additional external report, not involved in the doctoral thesis by a professor from outside the ETH Zurich

The Professors Conference approves the theses nominated by the Doctoral Committee for the industry prices (Chorafas, ABB, Hilti) in March, which must be submitted to the Rector's Office and will be judged by an external jury. The required documents, deadlines, any further requirements and procedures are announced to the professors by the Student Administration in accordance with the directives of the relative prices.
