Matthias Kaiserswerth received degrees in computer science from Erlangen University in Germany and McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and in 1997 his PhD from Erlangen University. In 1988, he joined IBM Research, Zurich as a research staff member, participating in a series of research projects in the field of network technology. From 1995, he managed a team working on the integration of various networking applications as well as aspects of network security. In 1997, he began to concentrate solely on network security while on assignment at IBM Research in the U.S., where in 1998/99 he became Manager of the Networks and Security department.
He returned to the Zurich Research Laboratory in 1999 to lead the Computer Science department. His appointment as the new Laboratory Director puts a European back at the helm of the Zurich lab, whose mission as the European branch of IBM Research is to foster relationships with academic and industrial partners throughout Europe, to attract the most talented and promising European research staff, as well as to pursue research in technical areas in which Europe is the global leader.
