Biography

Reza S. Abhari has been full Professor of Aerothermodynamics at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zürich) since October 1, 1999. He is the head of the Institute for Energy Technologies at ETH as well as the Director of the Laboratory for Energy Conversion, a multi-disciplinary joint industry-university research center.

A citizen of the United States of America, Prof. Abhari received his BA degree in Engineering Science from Oxford University in 1984 and his PhD from the Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering Department of MIT in 1991. Following his Ph.D., he held various senior research positions in industry. In 1995, he joined the faculty of the Ohio State University (OSU) with a joint appointment in Aerospace Engineering Department and the Mechanical Engineering Department.

His research activities focus on developing break-through technologies for substantially lowering the fuel consumption and pollutant emissions, while increasing the reliability of different types of energy conversion devices. His current research interests include the experimental and computational study of fluid dynamics, heat transfer and vibration relating to power generation and aircraft engines, advanced diagnostic sensor and actuator technologies, power plant optimization, and active and passive flow control.

Prof. Abhari is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He is a member of a number of international committees, Chairperson of IGTI Turbomachinery Committee, Associate Editor of JTM, and a member of editorial board of IMECE Journal of Power and Energy. He is also an active member of a number of international expert committees, as well as being an advisor to several multi-national corporations.
