Biography
-------------------------
Edoardo Mazza has been Full Professor of Mechanics at the Institute of Mechanical Systems of ETH Zurich since January 1st, 2010.
Edoardo Mazza was born on March 1st 1969 in Sondrio (Italy). He studied mechanical engineering at ETH Zurich and received his Dr. sc. techn. degree at the ETH under the guidance of Prof. Dr. J. Dual at the Institute of Mechanics. For his dissertation on the Mechanical Behaviour of Micrometer Sized Structures he was awarded the ETH medal. After his PhD he has been working in industry from 1997 to 2001. At Alstom Power he was group leader in the steam turbine R&D department and was responsible for the mechanical analysis of stationary and rotatory components.
In 2001 he was appointed as Assistant Professor, in 2006 as Associate Professor for Mechanics at ETH Zurich. Since 2006 he leads the laboratory "Mechanics for modeling and simulation" of EMPA. His research deals with the solution of challenging continuum mechanics problems in modern engineering. Novel experimental techniques and constitutive models are developed for the characterization of the mechanical behaviour of structures and materials. The mechanical response of soft biological tissues in human organs are investigated by experiments and described with appropriate mathematical models for applications in medicine. The calculation of material damage due to low cycle fatigue and creep in power generation turbines is verified by experiments on component like probes. In other research projects he investigates the mechanical behaviour of mechanical components of micro- and nanosystems (in particular: single crystal silicon), and structures made of adaptive materials.
