Biography
-------------------------
Philipp Rudolf von Rohr is professor for process engineering at ETH Zurich since 1992.
He graduated at ETH in Zurich in mechanical engineering with specialization in process engineering and completed the studies in 1978 with the diploma degree.
After one year as scientific associate at the Institute of Process Engineering he started his thesis at the same Institute at ETH Zurich. In 1983 he received his doctorate and a stipend from the Swiss National Science Foundation for a postdoc at MIT in Cambridge, USA. Two years later he returned to ETH and started as lecturer in multi phase flow and as first assistant in the group of Prof.F.Widmer. In 1986 he became a research associate and project manager in a middle sized company which developed and erected processes and plants in the area of environmental technologies. He became technical director in 1990 before he returned to ETH in 1992 to fully commit to research and teaching. In 1998 his Laboratory for Transport Processes and Reaction is been founded.
He was during four two years periods head of the Institute of Process Engineering and from 1997 until 2000 he chaired the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH. In 1999 he was guest professor at UC Santa Barbara in California, USA, in 2006 at MIT, USA. In his research he focuses on three main areas, namely the transport processes, the plasma assisted processes and high pressure processes in different scales from nano to macro. His recent major achievements are in the area of plasma assisted processes for particles and in the field of wet oxidation. He is strongly engaged with national and international universities, organizations and industries and with internationally recognized journals. Among those activities are executive board member of the Swiss Society of Chemical and Process Engineering and head of the working party “multiphase flow” within the European Federation of Chemical Engineers. Besides other honours he became in 2006 fellow at the Swiss Academy of Technical Sciences.
