Biography
-------------------------
Aldo Steinfeld has been Full Professor of the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH Zurich since 2007, where he holds the Chair of Renewable Energy Carriers. He further leads the Solar Technology Laboratory at the Paul Scherrer Institute.
He was born 1960 in Montevideo, Uruguay. He received his B.Sc. in Aeronautical Engineering from the Technion in 1983, and his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1989. Prior to joining PSI and ETH, he was Research Fellow at the Department of Environmental Sciences and Energy Research of the Weizmann Institute of Science. At ETH Zurich, he served as the Head of the Institute of Energy Technology from 2005-2007 and Associate Head of Research of the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering from 2007-2009.
His research program is aimed at the advancement of the thermal, thermochemical, and electrochemical engineering sciences applied to the field of renewable energy technology. The research focus is in radiation heat transfer and high-temperature reacting multi-phase flows, with applications in concentrated solar power and solar fuels production, fossil fuel decarbonization processes, CO2 mitigation technologies, and sustainable energy conversion.
Prof. Steinfeld served as the Editor of the ASME Journal of Solar Energy Engineering (2005-2009). He has authored over 200 research articles in refereed scientific journals and has contributed chapters to the Encyclopedia of Physical Science & Technology and the Encyclopedia of Energy. His contributions to science and education have been recognized with the ASME Calvin Rice Award (2006), the UOP/Honeywell Lecturer (2006), the University of Minnesota Founders Lecturer (2007), and the ASME Yellott Award (2008). Prof. Steinfeld is member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences.
