Raffaello D’Andrea named IFAC Fellow
Raffaello D’Andrea, Professor at the Institute of Dynamic Systems and Control of the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH Zurich, receives the Fellow Award of the International Federation of Automation Control (IFAC) for his contributions in the development of distributed and cooperative robotic systems and their commercialization.

Raffaello D’Andrea, Professor for Dynamic Systems and Control at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering of ETH Zurich, wins the "Pros to Know" award 2022 by "Supply & Demand Chain Executive" magazine. The award recognizes outstanding executives in the supply chain industry.

Sampada Bodkhe appointed Assistant Professor
Sampada Bodkhe, former post-doctoral researcher at Professor Paolo Ermanni’s Laboratory of Composite Materials and Adaptive Structures at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, has been appointed Assistant Professor at Polytechnique Montréal.
Nicole Aegerter featured Forbes 30 Under 30 Honoree
Nicole Aegerter, co-founder of the MAVT start-up Antefil Composite Tech and doctoral student with Professor Paolo Ermanni at the Laboratory of Composite Materials and Adaptive Structures of the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH Zurich, is featured Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe 2021 Honoree in Manufacturing and Industry.
Award Hilti-Prize 2015
Tobias Ott, former doctoral student in Prof. Lino Guzzella's group, received the Hilti-Prize for Innovative Research 2015 for his excellent doctoral thesis "Hybrid-Electric Vehicle with Natural Gas-Diesel Engine".
ETH team awarded prize for energy management system
Today, the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) is presenting the Watt d’Or energy prize in the Energy-efficient mobility category to the team of Prof. Lino Guzzella and Prof. Christopher Onder from the Institute for Dynamic Systems and Control. This award is in recognition of the technology the institute has developed in collaboration with Carrosserie Hess AG.
Students win iCAN international contest
ETH students Ricarda Nebling and Pius Theiler from Prof. Christofer Hierold’s group and a student* from EPFL won first prize with their project µWINDfon at the iCAN, an international student contest for innovative ideas held between 6 - 8 July 2016 in Paris. µWINDfon is an innovative anemometer for evaluating smaller windpower sites that is significantly cheaper and easier to handle than existing systems. *Name deleted on request (May 2019)
MaP Award

Marko Bjelonic wins Hans-Eggenberger-Prize
Marko Bjelonic, postdoctoral researcher at the Robotic Systems Lab of Professor Marco Hutter at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering of ETH Zurich, receives the Hans-Eggenberger-Prize for his doctoral thesis in wheeled-legged robotics.

Dennis M. Kochmann, Professor of Mechanics and Materials at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering wins the John Argyris Award 2022 by the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM) for his contributions in computational mechanics.
How whitecaps form in the sea
A research group led by ETH Professor Petros Koumoutsakos from the Computational Science & Engineering Laboratory was awarded the 2019 APS/DFD Gallery of Fluid Motion Award for its video on the formation of foam crowns on waves.
Koumoutsakos new member of National Academy of Engineering
Petros Koumoutsakos, Professor of Computational Science at the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Process Engineering, has been elected to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE). The election to the NAE is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer.

Marco Mazzotti, Professor and leader of the Separation Processes Laboratory at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, and his former doctoral student Franziska Ortner, were honored at the 13th International Conference on Fundamentals of Adsorption in Cairns, Australia.

Mechanical engineering team wins 3D Pioneers Challenge 2022
A team of Master's students and lecturers at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering wins the 3D Pioneers Challenge 2022. They are awarded for the bellow rail brake that they developed. In total, projects from 27 countries and five continents were submitted for this competition.

Mirko Meboldt, Professor of Product Development and Design at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, has been invited to join the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech).

IJP Young Investigator Award
Prof. Dirk Mohr has received the IJP Young Investigator Award for his excellent contribution to the field of plasticity over the past five years. The international award committee emphasized its particularly high appreciation for Prof. Mohr’s balanced portfolio of experimental and theoretical mechanics (applied to both plasticity and ductile fracture).

Image Contest
Pedro Castro Fernandez form Prof. Christoph Müller’s group, Patrick Reissner from Prof. Andreas Stemmer’s group and Steven Wang from D-HEST were nominated for the MaP Image Contest. The award was won by Pedro Castro Fernandez and presented at the MaP Graduate Symposium 2016 at ETH Zurich on 9 June 2016.
Grand Hamdan Award for Brad Nelson
Brad Nelson, ETH Professor of Robotics and Intelligent Systems at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT), receives the Grand Hamdan International Award for his research on nanorobots for healthcare.
MARSS Big-on-Small Award for Pané Vidal
Salvador Pané, senior scientist at Professor Bradley Nelson’s Multi-Scale Robotics Lab at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, was honored with the Big-on-Small Award at the International Conference on Manipulation, Automation and Robotics at Small Scales (MARSS).

Distinguished Paper
Prof. Nicolas Noiray and Dr. Alexey Denisov received the Distinguished Paper award in the Gas Turbine Combustion category at the 36th International Symposium on Combustion in Seoul.
Best Paper Award at the ASME Turbo Expo 2015
Prof. Nicolas Noiray received the Best Paper Award at the ASME Turbo Expo 2015 for a contribution presented in 2014 at the same conference.

Awards for doctoral students at the MaP Graduate Symposium 2023
At the MaP Graduate Symposium 2023, four doctoral students from the D-MAVT received awards for their research. Awards went to Oscar Cipolato, Anna De Vries, Yannik Glauser, and Sonja Schreiner.
David Norris appointed Optica Fellow 2023
Professor David Norris, Head of the Optical Materials Engineering Laboratory at the ETH Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, has been named an Optica Fellow 2023. Optica is an international scientific association in the field of optics and photonics.

Kavli Prize Symposium in Nanoscience
Prof. Dimos Poulikakos was one of the four invited speakers in the Kavli Prize Symposium in Nanoscience. The biannual award ceremony and symposium took place from 5 to 8 September 2016 in Oslo and Trondheim, Norway.

Ines Weber wins GAeF PhD Award 2022
Ines Weber, former doctoral student at the Particle Technology Laboratory of Professor Sotiris Pratsinis at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, wins the GAeF PhD Award at the 2022 International Aerosol Conference for her outstanding doctoral thesis. Another doctoral student and a Master's student from the lab receive poster awards.
Kelesidis wins ISF Presentation Award
Dr. Georgios Kelesidis received a “Best Three-Minute Presentation Award” at the 6th International Sooting Flame Workshop of 22-23 July 2022 for his presentation on "Porosity and crystallinity dynamics of carbon black during internal and surface oxidation".
Donald Julius Groen Prize
Andrea Antenucci, former doctoral student at the Reliability and Risk Engineering Laboratory of Professor Giovanni Sansavini at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, has been awarded the Donald Julius Groen Prize by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
Best Poster Award
Prof. Giovanni Sansavini and his group were awarded the Best Poster Award for their poster about their study on “Security Analysis of the Operations of Interdependent Electric and Gas Networks” at the 2016 SCCER-FURIES (Swiss Competence Center for Energy Research) Annual Conference on 2 December 2016 in Lausanne.

Thomas Schutzius receives Golden Owl 2020
Thomas Schutzius, Professor and Head of the Laboratory for Multiphase Thermofluidics and Surface Nanoengineering at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, receives the Golden Owl for excellent teaching. The Owl is awarded by the students association of ETH Zurich (VSETH) and honors exceptional teaching.

Chen appointed Assistant Professor
Tian (Tim) Chen, former doctoral student of Professor Kristina Shea at the Engineering Design and Computing Laboratory at ETH Zurich’s Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, has been appointed Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Houston.
Outstanding Contribution
The paper "Estimating the Potential of State the Art Design Automation – Tasks, Methods, and Benefits" by Eugen Rigger, Clemens Münzer and Prof. Krisitna Shea was rated in the top 5% papers based on reviewers’ scores.

Roland Siegwart achieves top ranking
Roland Siegwart is honored by the academic platform research.com in the field of mechanical and aerospace engineering as well as in the field of electronics and electrical engineering.
IROS Best Paper Award for Cuniato
Eugenio Cuniato, doctoral student in Professor Roland Siegwart’s group at the Autonomous Systems Lab at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering received the IROS Best Paper Award on Safety, Security, and Rescue Robotics for the paper "Power-based Safety Layer for Aerial Vehicles in Physical Interaction using Lyapunov Exponents".

AIChE Sustainable Engineering Research Award 2022 for Steinfeld
Aldo Steinfeld, Professor and head of the Professorship of Renewable Energy Carriers at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, received the AIChE Sustainable Engineering Research Award 2022 by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, for basic and applied research results relative to the sustainability of products, processes, and the environment, at the 2022 AIChE Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona.

Alexandre Anthis, former doctoral student of Professor Inge Herrmann at the Nanoparticle Systems Engineering Lab, won the MaP Award 2022 for his doctoral thesis "Design and Formulation of Stimuli-Responsive Surgical Materials".

Konrad Wegener, Professor Emeritus for Machine Tools and Manufacturing at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, receives the Golden Owl for his excellent teaching. The Owl is awarded by the student association of ETH Zurich (VSETH) and honors particularly committed teachers.
HILTI Award 2016
Dr. Umang Jivanlal Maradia, former doctoral student in Prof. Konrad Wegeners group, has received the HILTI Award 2016 for his doctoral thesis "Meso - Micro EDM".
Boulouchos, Konstantinos, Prof. Dr.
R&D 100 Award 2016 for simulation software
Nek5000, a software for the simulation of fluid flow and combustion, received the prestigious R&D 100 Award 2016. A team of researchers lead by Dr. Christos Frouzakis and Prof. Konstantin Boulouchos at the Laboratory of Aerothermochemistry and Combustion Systems (LAV) has participated in the development of the software.
Kamm-Jante Medal
Stephanie Schlatter, former doctoral student of Prof. Konstantinos Boulouchos has been awarded a Kamm-Jante Medal. This prize is awarded every two years for the best dissertation on Engine Combustion Technologies in the German-speaking countries, which means Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Mesh Mould Project Team receives Concrete Innovation Award 2017
The Mesh Mould project team was awarded the Concrete Innovation Award 2017. The team is part of the NCCR Digital Fabrication and is supported, among others, by the Agile and Dexterous Robotics Lab at the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Prix Zonta for Margarita Chli
Professor Margarita Chli was awarded the Prix Zonta 2017 for her research on machine vision. With this prize the Swiss Zonta Clubs honor women for their achievements in the scientific and technical field.
Top Women in Robotics 2016: two D-MAVT researchers in the top 25
Robohub, the online platform of the Zurich-based ROBOTS Association, has released the 2016 version of the “25 Top Women in Robotics you need to know about”. Margarita Chli and Simone Schürle are honored in this year's list.

The TapTools team Clara Beck, Tom Reuter and Marc Serra Garcia, from Prof. Chiara Daraio's group, won second prize in the competition for the best business ideas at Venture 2015.

Michael Gerlt receives Coakley Award
Michael Gerlt, doctoral student at the D-MAVT Institute for Mechanical Systems of Professor Jürg Dual, received the Coakley Award for his flash presentation “Highly efficient acoustophoretic single cell-supernatant separation inside nanoliter droplets” at the Acoustofluidics 2020 conference in August, which took place online.

Two doctoral students from the research group of Jürg Dual, Professor at the Institute for Mechanical Systems, received awards at the International Congress on Ultrasonics in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Awards for Institute of Virtual Manufacturing
Double honor for the Institute of Virtual Manufacturing of Professor Pavel Hora. Doctoral student Maximilian Neuhauser has won the MATERIALICA Award 2019 for students. Neuhauser and Felix Linnenschmidt also received Venture Kick funding for their ETH spin-off OptoGuard.
Audi Tool Trophy 2016
Michael Grubenmann, a Bachelor student in Prof. Pavel Hora's group, received 3rd place at the Audi Tool Trophy 2016 with his Bachelor's Thesis.

Prize-winning UV protection and chairless chairs
Not one… but two ETH-Zurich spin-offs managed to convince the judging panel from the venture kick initiative and win an advancement award of CHF 130,000. The best start-up projects of the year’s first quarter were a sun-protection app and a chair that can walk.

Best Student Technical Paper Award
Michael Gloor, doctoral student in the group of Prof. Leonhard Kleiser, received the Best Student Technical Paper award for his paper on the aeroacoustics of heated coaxial jets that he presented at the 20th AIAA Aeroacoustics Conference (Atlanta, USA, June 2014). At the PASC Conference 14, Zurich, June 2014, Michael Gloor received both the Best Poster Award (Physics), and the Visualization Award.
Best Speaker Award at the iCAIM 2014
Marco Altheimer, doctoral student in Prof. Philipp Rudolf von Rohr's team, received the Best Speaker Award for his oral presentation about the paper "Optical investigation of bubbly flows in highly porous structures" at the iCAIM - International Conference on Applications for Image Based Measurements 2014 in Leipzig, Germany, 24 to 25 June 2014.
