Jan Carmeliet

Before taking the position at D-MAVT he had been since June 2008 a full professor at the Chair of Building Physics at ETH Zurich and head of the Laboratory for Multiscale studies in Building Physics of Empa, Duebendorf.

His research focuses on multiscale behavior of porous and granular materials, heat-air-moisture flow in the urban environment and energy systems at building and urban scale. His research is based on advanced computational modelling and time-resolved imaging of transport processes in porous materials as well as fluid flow in wind and water tunnels.

Carmeliet is a graduate of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (K.U.Leuven) and holds a doctoral degree in Civil Engineering. Before joining ETH Zurich he worked at the K.U.Leuven, the T.U.Eindhoven and spent his sabbatical leave at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and at Los Alamos Governmental Laboratories.

He was a member of the research commission of ETH Zurich, the Board of the ETH Energy Science Center, the scientific commission of the CCEM (Centre of Competence Energy and Mobility). He is an expert of the Commission of Technology and Innovation Switzerland (CTI/engineering), graduate program director ‘master integrated building systems’ at ETH Zurich, National Research Councilor of the SNSF research division 4, and strongly involved in the Swiss Competence Center for Energy Research.
