Supervision

The doctoral thesis supervisor is responsible for the academic supervision and personnel management of his/her doctoral students.

D-MAVT professors (including adjunct professors (titular associate, Titularprofessors) and accredited professors) may act as supervisors for doctoral theses, in which case they are responsible for the infrastructures and funding.

In agreement with the doctoral candidate, the doctoral thesis supervisor designates an academically qualified person with proven expertise who, as a second advisor, provides the doctoral candidate with additional specialist support and task-related advice.

D-MAVT requires that the second advisor has a doctoral degree and that he/she should preferably be a professor or permanent scientist. The second advisor is significantly involved in the development of the doctoral plan and part of the committee of the aptitude colloquium.

The Downloadappointment of a second supervisor (PDF, 232 KB) is obligatory for all doctoral students and must be reported to the D-MAVT Doctoral Administration.

Deadlines for appointment:

  • Doctoral students who were newly admitted after 1 January 2022 appoint their second advisor before the qualifying colloquium (deadline = admission date + 12 months).
  • Doctoral students provisionally admitted on 1 January 2022 will appoint their second advisor by 31 December 2022.
  • Doctoral students who are definitively admitted on 1 January 2022 appoint their second advisor by 30 June 2022.
  • Doctoral students whose research plan has been approved and who take their doctoral exam no later than 30 June 2022 are no longer required to report a second advisor.

The role of the second advisor can also be performed in personal union with the role of the co-examiner. If this is the case, only persons who also fulfil the requirements for co-examiners can be considered.

During the entire doctorate period doctoral students have the right to request a further advisor who will provide academic or non-academic assistance.
