Biography
-------------------------
Leonhard Kleiser has been full Professor of Fluid Mechanics at the Institute of Fluid Dynamics of ETH Zurich since September 1994.
He was born in 1949 in Freiburg, Germany and studied mathematics and physics at the University of Freiburg. After his diploma he worked for six years as a scientific staff member at the Karlsruhe Research Center, where he was involved with the development of numerical methods and numerical flow simulations. In 1982 he received his doctorate (Dr.-Ing.) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Karlsruhe (TH). That same year he transferred to the German Aerospace Research Establishment (DLR) at the Gottingen Research Center, where he took responsibility for the research group «Transition and Turbulence» at the Institute for Theoretical Fluid Mechanics.
His main research areas are turbulent flows and laminar-turbulent transition. Turbulent and transitional flows are investigated by direct numerical simulations. Here no turbulence models are employed, but the basic equations of fluid dynamics are numerically integrated on large computers whereby all relevant length and time scales of the flow must be resolved.Such investigations contribute to a better understanding of the fundamental phenomena and mechanisms of transition and turbulence, to the conceptual exploration of methods for flow control, and to the development of improved models for practical calculation methods.
Prof. Kleiser is a co-editor of ZAMP and a member of AIAA, APS, DGLR and GAMM.
