Hossein Gorji completed both his Master’s studies and doctoral dissertation (honoured with ETH medal) in Mechanical Engineering at ETH Zurich. In his doctoral studies, he focused on stochastic modeling of gas flows, relevant for micro/nano systems as well as reentry flights. After his postdoc fellowship at RWTH Aachen and an SNF Ambizione position at EPFL, he joined Empa in 2020.

In his research, he pursues stochastic surrogate models in the form of data-driven simulation tools to gain insight into a wide range of phenomena: multi-scale fluid dynamics, biomedical flows, and epidemiology.

Since July 2023, he is affiliated with the University of Southern California (USC) as Adjunct Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering in addition to his position at Empa. With his research at USC, he further contributes to the development of stochastic and machine-learning methods revolving around scientific computing.
