Better together

The positive impact of transdisciplinary and cross-institutional collaboration on medical solutions is demonstrated by a project involving Julian Wolf, a doctoral student at ETH Zurich, working together with Florentin Liebman and Marco von Atzigen from the University of Zurich/Balgrist.

Julian Wolf, a doctoral student in the product development group of ETH professor Mirko Meboldt, has worked with two doctoral students, Florentin Liebman (UZH/Balgrist) and Marco von Atzigen (UZH/Balgrist), to develop a solution to improve spinal surgery. They are relying on computer algorithms and augmented reality. With the help of these technologies, surgeons should be able to perform the complex steps during surgery more precisely in the future. This is important so that, for example, the nerves in the spine are not injured.

For their solution, the three were awarded the HMZ Award 2022. The "HMZ Award - The PhD team challenge" honors interdisciplinary project work by PhD students from ETH and the University of Zurich. The award is intended to promote collaboration across institutions.
